Greenville, SC is a beautiful city with a lot to offer. However, it is also located in an area that is prone to a variety of inclement weather conditions. Here is a look at some of the most common types of inclement weather that Greenville experiences:

  • Snow: Snow is not a common occurrence in Greenville, but it does happen occasionally. When it does snow, the city can come to a standstill. Schools and businesses may close, and roads can become treacherous. We can go years without any measurable snowfall!
  • Ice: Ice storms are more common in Greenville than snowstorms. Ice can cause power outages and make travel dangerous.  Our last significant ice event was in 2006, but we have had some smaller events, included in January 2025.
  • Hurricanes: Hurricanes can bring strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding to Greenville. The city is located far enough inland that it does not usually experience the full force of a hurricane, but it can still be affected by the storm's outer bands.  Helene affected our area more than any other hurricane in recent memory. In years past, we typically only see tropical depressions with gusty winds and some significant rainfall.
  • Flooding: Flooding is a risk in Greenville, especially during periods of heavy rain. The Reedy River can overflow its banks, and low-lying areas can be inundated.
  • Tornadoes: Tornadoes are a threat in Greenville, especially during the spring and summer months, but they are relatively rare given our topography.
